On June 2, 2010, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) released the final version of the K-12 standards in English Language Arts, Literacy in History/Social Studies and Science, and Mathematics as part of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, a process being led by governors and state school superintendents in 48 states, 2 territories, and the District of Columbia. These standards, developed together with teachers, school administrators, curriculum content experts and others, seek to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce. The final versions may be accessed in the table above, or at http://www.corestandards.org. The Oklahoma State Department of Education received the first round of public comments, questions, and feedback from Oklahomans and submitted a summary of those comments to the NGA Center and CCSSO for consideration as they prepared the final versions. We would still like to hear from you. You may send an email to CommonCoreStandards@sde.state.ok.us and/or complete an online survey by clicking here. These comments will be compiled and shared with the Oklahoma State Board of Education in the coming months. The Oklahoma State Department of Education hosted a videoconference on Wednesday, March 31, about the Common Core State Standards Initiative, including an opportunity for question and answer as well as public comments. You may view a recording of the videoconference here. The Common Core State Standards Initiative, which began officially in July 2009, will provide states choosing to adopt the standards with common language and common expectations for all students. Governor Brad Henry and State Superintendent Sandy Garrett were among the first to sign on to the state-led initiative, and educators across the state are looking forward to the opportunities that having common standards in English language arts and mathematics could provide to Oklahoma. |
